Frequently Asked Questions
Bestie Speak offers group classes of small class size. Usually, a group class consists of 2 to 5 students. Our group classes allow students to take note of each other’s strengths, and assist students to showcase their talents in front of others to boost their confidence. In general, students will join our group classes before receiving the competition notification, as to get familiarized and grasp the basic speech recital techniques, such as meaning, verbal and gestural performance, as well as to build up their self confidence.
Generally speaking, students will join 4 to 8 speech training classes. The first learning stage consists of 4 group speech training classes. This stage allows students to grasp the meaning and messages of the poem, verbal elements (including pronuciation, enunication, intonation and volume contrast), and non-verbal elements (such as facial expressions, eye contact and gestures). Last but not least, etiquette in speech recitals will also be taught.
Application is the key for the second learning stage. This stage allows students to apply diverse speech recital techniques learnt in the first stage naturally. All students will need to maintain the quality of their performance before the competition. Therefore, this stage will assist students in building confidence before the competition, as well as allowing them to get familiarized with performing on-stage!
In addition, students could book several private lessons before the competition for last minute preparation.
To have a better plan for students’ development in speech recital, first-timers are recommended to enroll for the language they are most familiar with. By being confident in the language spoken, first-timers could be more relaxed in class and enjoy speech recitals. This can also reduce their anxiety in the speech competition, allowing them to express themselves freely, and enjoy speech recitals gradually. After gaining a sense of achievement and satisfaction from students’ first competition, they can then enroll for speech competitions of other languages to enrich their knowledge in pieces of another language.
Speech recital requires the combination of 3 aspects, including understanding of the piece (background and hidden meaning), verbal elements (use of the voice) and non-verbal elements (gestural performance). In general, students will gain understanding towards the piece and learn the basics of verbal elements such as pronunciation, speaking volume, speed of speech and more in the first lesson. The second lesson teaches gestural performance techniques such as facial expressions and eye contact.
In the third lesson, body gestures will be added to the performance according to the meaning and grade level of the piece. In general, less body gestures will be assigned to pieces for higher grade levels. (The number of body gestures and requirements varies with different speech competitions)
The fourth lesson focuses on developing students’ confidence and maintaining the quality of their performance, as to help them get well prepared before the competition. Therefore, the first 4 lessons is crucial to students’ acquisition of basic speech recital techniques in understanding of the piece, verbal and non-verbal elements.
In general, most competitors would wear school uniforms to HKSMSA’s Speech Festival competitions. Therefore, we would recommend students to compete in their school uniforms.
For other speech recital competitions, competitors could wear neat and tidy attire unless otherwise specified by the organizer.
We would not suggest students to memorize the piece before the first class. Each piece may contain some more advanced vocabulary, as well as words that are often mispronounced. Therefore, students will first be taught the correct pronunciation of words in the first lesson. For those who have joined a complete learning stage of 4 classes, will receive the complete demonstration audio of the poem after the first lesson for them to revise and memorize the piece at home.
