Speaking with Your Eyes

Eye contact is one of the most crucial elements we often remind students of. Be it a job interview or school interview, your level of eye contact often says more about you than the words you utter. Hence it is one of the most important criteria in the non-verbal aspect we pay attention to in our trainings.

As the saying goes, our eyes are the window to our souls. We speak with our eyes, displaying thoughts and emotions blatantly in them. No matter how hard one tries to cover up their nervousness or nonchalance in their facial expressions, their eyes show. Therefore, it is crucially important for speakers to show sincerity and effort through eye contact in a presentation or interview.

In other words, our eyes convey just as much as our mouth. Therefore, it is very important that speakers get enough rest on the night before their performance, speech or interview. This ensures speaker looks well-rested, mindful and rosy, and their eyes bright and healthy.

Additionally, eye contact is not only useful on formal occasions. It also bridges interpersonal communication in our daily life. In conversations, we express respect with genuine eye contact. In presentations, we focus on not one person but the entire audience in general, projecting our attention onto each group of people to resonate with our audience.

Now, think of some of your friends who are not the best at making eye contact with others, do they tend to give off an energy that shows they are shy or intimidated? So, start practicing a different way of looking people today, bring out your confidence which gives off positive energy and bridges communication and and build connections between you and your audience!
